1983 Code of Canon Law, the need for the Church to focus on forgiveness and God’s mercy. Today, the Church does not teach that someone who commits suicide is automatically condemned to hell. Grave psychological anguish or suffering can diminish the responsibility of a person who dies by suicide. Suicide is contrary to love for the Living God, but we do not despair of eternal life for these souls. God, in ways known to him alone, can provide a means of repentance for them.
